BIG AL

November 12, 2008

I first saw him as a 6′6″ sophomore at Grand Ledge high school in Grand Ledge, Michigan. I was sitting high atop the gym at Waverly High School with Jim Comparoni from Spartan Magazine watching this deer run the floor. “Comp” said to me, ‘He’s a future millionaire’! This was without even touching the ball!  He is the son of former NBA player Tito – ladies and gentlemen, I give you Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks.

The second year pro out of the University of Florida where he captured back-to-back NCAA titles put on some performance Tuesday night against the Chicago Bulls. Sekou K. Smith from the ACJ has the story. And to think, a college assistant coach told me during Horford’s senior year in high school that he “was just average.” Horford is living proof that with hard work, anything is possible in the greatest game!

“Al can pass, he can score, he plays defense and he can …” Mike Bibby said from his chair after the game, “he’s a hard man to stop.”

Here’s a cool interview with Al having dinner with Cheryl Miller of TNT.

BACK TO SCHOOL

Good people do good things…Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks is taking summer classes when he can be hanging out on a beach or just chilling.  But Horford, as he has always done, prefers to do the right thing.  The AJC.com has the story

“Doesn’t surprise me that he’s here,” Florida coach Billy Donovan said. “He’s gifted and grounded, about as good a kid as I’ve been around. He’s the type of kid that this is going to be important to him.”

“He’s not messing around. He’s a good student and a real part of the class,” said Annie Sugar, who’s teaching the Television and American Society course. Horford said he carried a 3.3 GPA into the summer session.
